Today, a brief guest post from a great friend of mine, Carolyn Causton. You may have heard her music at Writers FM or Self Dev Radio. She's a true talent, and she's now working with Fauna & Flora International, the conservation group supported by Stephen Fry. Feel a little of her passion, and - if you can - check out the official Fauna Flora website at http://www.fauna-flora.org/ * * * I've spent years behind a desk for my job, and I've always been extremely lucky to have jobs that I have enjoyed and, most recently, that contribute directly to the wellbeing of others. Though my 'ideal job' as a youngster would have been to be a forest ranger (I worked briefly as a volunteer on a nature reserve in North London), my career path took a very different course. This time I've definitely hit the jackpot as far as jobs go - and I don't mean financially, but in terms of fulfilment and engagement. Around me my colleagues talk of their time in Kenya, India, America, Alaska, Indonesia, Viet Nam and Antarctica. I am in fact now working for a conservation organisation where the employees are not just dedicated but hands-on experienced. The Membership Secretary used to be an Antarctic Scientist, the Comms Officer use to work with endangered Wallabies in Australia and the Fundraising Officer (who I am slightly worried to find out loves dressing up as a gorilla) has spent time in Swaziland. Next month he is going out to Indonesia for more hands on conservation work (hopefully not in costume, he'd have some problems at customs). There are 60 people working for the charity in nearly every corner of the world. The work I'm doing now, a change from my previous employment, means I need to learn (and quickly) about Fauna and Flora International's conservation projects: the work we do with (to name but a few) gorillas, trees, people, habitats, bats, carbon emissions, global warming, and - crucially - how to fund the work we do all over the planet. In short, every day I work here inspires me (and also stirs some previously suppressed wanderlust). Most of the people round me are younger and have done or are doing their travelling now (for work, sabbatical, or just for the hell of it). I would love to travel more and even do some field work myself, but I do know that it's not all 'cute cuddly animals' - oh no! The work this fantastic organisation does is much more varied than that - they work with Kyrgyzstani women to help manage the sustainability of their fruit and nut forests, help farmers build buffalo fences to protect their crops (and the buffalo) and help local communities to develop tourism and other forms of enterprise to reduce the impact on their environment. The dedication of the people in the office is just a reflection of those out in the field - and I am very proud to be part of the oldest conservation charity in the world. I may only be here for a year, but you can bet your last pound (please make sure you tick the 'gift aid' box on your donation form!) that I am going to put everything I can into it - I'm already getting so much out. I've never been afraid to get my hands dirty, so who knows, one day I may actually do something a bit more adventurous with the rest of my life. The thing is, believe you can, and you will. Nick Daws recently tagged me in this meme on his writing blog. The task was to answer questions about writing - then tag other writers to do the same. So, here goes, Nick: 1. Which words do you use too much in your writing? I used to say "Basically" too much. Then "And" to start a sentence. Then "But." Now I just use too many words full stop ;) 2. Which words do you consider overused in stuff you read? All the new social media phrases: Twit-anything, Web 2.0 (it's already here: get over it), improper spelling/capitalisation of anything technical. ("web," "internet," "E-Mail," etc.) 3. What's your favourite piece of writing by you? How self-loathing! :) It's always the last thing I wrote. So probably this article! I really liked The Secret Art of Self-Development book, which was released in May. I wrote that in just a few weeks, part-time - but it really captures the essence of my logical, "spiritual" views. 4. What are your other favourite blogs? I'm a big fan of: http://www.mywritingblog.com/ http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/blog/ 5. Regrets, do you have a few? Is there anything you wish you hadn't written? I look back at some of my earlier "humorous" writing and it's quite obvious how my wit (or former lack thereof) has developed! I regret not finding time to read more, especially the classics. And I really want to find time to write my big next book: my true passion, all about spirituality vs religion. (Watch out for a follow-on documentary too!) 6. How has your writing made a difference? What do you consider your most important piece of writing? In the early days, I wrote a few computer programming books. I received some great feedback, with people stating it was the only coding book they'd ever taken on vacation with them. Which was nice! These days, most of the feedback I receive follows the self-development writing - particularly here at Karl Blog.com. The feedback is superb, and I'm thrilled that the words I throw down every other day really makes a difference to people's lives all across the globe. 7. Name three favourite words Inspiration. Happiness. Mojito. 8. ...And three words you're not so keen on Annoyed. Slow. "Server-down." 9. Do you have a writing mentor, role model or inspiration? I often think that the reason I got involved in writing was an obsession in early-life with "Murder, She Wrote." I suspect I have a lot to thank Angela Lansbury for! 10. What's your writing ambition? To live in Maine, write mystery stories to international acclaim - while still having time to solve the plentiful murders in my sleepy, local town. But while I'm in the UK, I really want to finish my magnus opum on logic, life and spirituality - followed by the documentary I mentioned. 11. Plug alert! List any work you would like to tell your readers about. Please - I'm British! But if you insist, please check out www.secretartbook.com. So, that's me! In accordance with Linda's rules (see below), I'm going to contact the recent authors I've interviewed at Writers FM - including Edwina Currie, Joanne Harris, Bernard Cornwell and Lucinda Hawksley. Let's hope they can get involved! :) The Offiial Rules If you have time to do this meme, then please link to my post here, then link to three to five other bloggers and pass it on, asking them to answer your questions and link back to you. You can add, remove or change one question as you go (as I did with Question 4 - feel free to revert to Linda's original if you like). You absolutely do not have to be what you may think of as a "published" or "successful" writer to respond to this meme. Have fun, and I look forward to reading more responses! When you read this, I'll be in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden.
Yes, this is a scheduled post. It isn't live.
But I can tell you something about what's happening to me right now.
It'll be around -35*c, so I might be a bit cold. Last night, I will have slept on a block of ice. And I might have already witnessed the aurora borealis... the northern lights.
As you read this, I will actually be being dragged through the snow by a pack of huskies.
But you can find out yourself... by visiting my Twitter page!
That's right. I'm micro-blogging the whole darn experience.

This weekend, I'm heading to the north of Sweden. I'll be staying in a hotel made entirely out of ice... sledging with husky dogs... snowmobiling through the wilderness... and hopefully catching the aurora borealis... It's going to be F.U.N. And the ONLY people that will get a glimpse of it... live pictures and all... will be those subscribing to my Twitter feed. Check me out - http://twitter.com/karlmoore Join the website and click to "Follow" me. Visit the site regularly, and post your own updates too. Well, it's that time of year again. I've officially donned the pinny and am doing a little spring cleaning on the blog. You'll see a small face-lift on the site over the coming days, but here's an overview of what's to come. Firstly, I'm on Twitter! Follow me at http://twitter.com/karlmoore/ If you know what it is, you know what to do. Secondly, I'm shifting to a better e-mail subscriber system. I have over 3000+ individuals subscribed via Google Groups to receive e-mail. But it's not that hot, to be honest. I'm not using FeedBurner. This service collates all of my posts from single day (if any), and sends them out by e-mail. They also look way better than the Google e-mail messages. I encourage you to subscribe by e-mail by clicking here. Then unsubscribe from your Google Groups subscription. Finally, are YOU subscribing via RSS yet? If not, then it's about time you did. Again, I'm centralizing using FeedBurner, so subscribe using this RSS link: http://feeds.feedburner.com/KarlBlog That's all. Thank you gang! :) Labels: blog stuff
You know something? I love this little blog. http://www.karlblog.com/ Every couple of days, I take time out to post messages to this blog - usually connected with self-development and inspiration. And I get some fantastic feedback, too. Great messages from even greater individuals, to whom the messages mean something at that point in their lives. In fact, it's surprising how often these messages seem to get to the right people at the right time. Today, this message is really intended for you. You see, I'm on a mission to increase the popularity of this blog. By Christmas, I'd love to see my subscriber numbers having boosted by at least 20%. That's why I'd like to ask you to recommend my blog! Post a review on your own website or blog. Forward this e-mail to your friends, and suggest they visit. Zap a quick message to your mailing list. Chat about the site in a forum. Do it now if you can. Suggest that people subscribe directly, using the box in the top-right hand corner of every Karl Blog.com page. Or invite them to subscribe via RSS/XML using the links on the right-hand sidebar. Or hint they should add my site to their favourites. But if you can, please spread the word. Today, if possible. All of your help and support is really very much appreciated. I'm on a mission. And I know you can help! Thank you for your time! :) Labels: blog stuff, recommendations
Today, a quick post about My Writers Circle. For those that don't know, I own and run the popular writers forum online at www.mywriterscircle.com. And secondly, because the book created by members of the community - "Station Shorts" - is continuing to sell fantastically well, with 5-star ratings. I'm proud to be part of such a community. It's about time this blog had it's own theme tune. That's why myself, Artist X and his gang have been working furiously over the past couple of months to create "This Time" ... the official song of Karl Blog.com! Below, you can find details of the entire experience -- including studio shots, lyrics, and more. I helped write the lyrics and style the song... and you can hear "Karl Blog!" sung repeatedly at the end of the track. Karl Blog.com Song Lyrics I’m free just like the sky above like the space between ourselves and us it’s all around you I let go of the voice inside no need to cling to thoughts and time there’s nothing to hold onto and it feels so nice to be here in this space and time and you and I lose ourselves outside our minds and love a feeling that is deep inside and I feel alright happy just to be alive this time each moments rises right on time they never miss a beat and I go with the flow around me you can’t touch me where I am I’m further from the place I’ve been just wait and soon we’ll all see and it feels so nice to be here in this space and time and you and I lose ourselves outside our minds and love a feeling that is deep inside and I feel alright happy just to be alive this time It’s always morning somewhere in the world wherever you may roam There’s nothing good or bad here at all but thinking makes it so If you always do what you’ve always done you’ll get more of what you’ve had A ship is safe in harbor but that’s not what it’s for live each day like it’s the last Karl Blog! This time last year, I made a koan.
I promised to post daily here at Karl Blog.com for a whole year.
And I've done it!
Every day, I've posted at least one message -- sometimes many. I've posted a whole bundle of Random Acts of Kindness, and an awesome series of Friday Factoids.
Occassionally, I've missed a day or two.
But, apparently, I'm only human.
It's been an amazing experience. I've found that being forced into writing each day has really kick-started my spirituality at the points I needed it most. I've discovered everything -- from the true size of our universe to the secret history of the keyboard. And I've done more RAKs than ever before -- especially on a Monday.
Yes -- daily blog writing is a koan I'd recommend to anyone.
(Incidentally, due to increased business matters, I've yet to decide what I'm going to do in future. I expect that during 2008 my blog posts will become slightly less frequent -- however hopefully much deeper than ever before!)
So... my question today is...
What's YOUR koan for 2008? (Learn more here.)
What can YOU do that will stretch your boundaries? What challenge will change your life?
What kind of new person will you be in exactly 366 days time? (Yup, 2008 is a leap year!)
As Mahatma Gandhi says... "Be the change you wish to see in the world."
Do it!
Your seconds on this earth are limited -- and are continuously being frittered away reading crazy posts like this.
Go, start living -- and enjoy every second!Labels: blog stuff, inspiration, ramblings

What messages on this blog have had the most impact on you?
Every day for almost a year now, I've posted messages designed to inspire, uplift and develop. Ironically, more often than not they've had a profound impact on me.
Yesterday's post "Who Are You?" made a lot of people really think -- and inspired around forty messages in my inbox, as well as chat at Karl Forum.com.
And so, today, I'm posting a list of the blog posts that have raised a good chunk of feedback -- typically thirty messages or more.
Maybe -- just maybe -- these will have an impact on you, too.
Enjoy - and Happy Thursday! :)

Today, I have a BIG announcement.
Over the past couple of months, I've received a lot of feedback from individuals wanting to connect with a bigger community of inspired friends.
They want to chat with the other individuals that read THIS blog.
I'm talking about the sort of people that are upbeat and positive. People that love sharing inspirational stories. Giving individuals that practice Random Acts of Kindness.
And of course, crazy people that love Friday Factoids!
Well, today, the wish is granted.
I've just launched a brand new FORUM... where friendly individuals from across the globe can get together to share their stories and help each other out.
It's EXPERIMENTAL, yes -- so I can't say for sure it'll work.
But I'd like to think that we can get a really friendly international community going here, one based on nothing but the simplicity of friendship.
And so, today, if you're interested... I'd like to ask that you please stop by the forum and register!
It'll probably be a little unusual to start off with, but we'll soon overcome that. I've posted the first message (actually the third, I was beat already!)... and I'm awaiting your response.
Remember, the forum may be called KarlForum.com -- but it's definitely NOT about me. Tsk, how egotistical! It's just about spreading the enjoyment of life.
So please visit the site at www.karlforum.com
Or to register directly, click here.
Thank you so much :)
(Oh, and I'll be looking out for moderators too. If you're interested, drop me a line and put "BPSF" in the subject line to bypass my spam filter.)Labels: blog stuff, factoids, recommendations
I'm really excited about my news today!
Finally, after much preparation, my official blog screensaver has been launched!
That's right.
If you enjoy receiving your daily dose of inspiration from this blog, then why not install the Karl Blog screensaver?
The screensaver randomly displays my favourite inspirational quotes, from Albert Einstein to Winston Churchill -- all on the most beautiful background scenes imaginable.
It's INCREDIBLY inspirational.
Just install it once and be inspired every time your screensaver kicks in. You can customize it too. There's absolutely NO advertising and NO spyware.
Best of all, it's completely FREE of charge. Made with love and care specially for the readers of Karl Moore's Blog!
Interested?
The Karl Blog screensaver weighs in at around 15MB, so it'll take a minute or two to download -- but I guarantee you'll love it.
Turn your computer downtime into inspiration uptime. Just click on the following link to download your copy of the screensaver, TODAY: Wondering what the screensaver looks like before downloading?
Here's a screenshot of one sample page. It's pretty small here, so just click to enlarge. The quote is from Shakespeare. "This above all: To thine own self be true."

We have a winner of the Codd bottle competition!
It's Nancy Poh, who came up with:
"I love reading Karl's Blog because nature cannot put that smile on my face as naturally as he does it!"
Thanks to everyone for their fantastic entries -- most notably Debby, Pat from NZ, Ann Johnson, "Ziko", and Henry Cortes!
Congratulations! :)Labels: blog stuff, fun
Well, you saw the video Friday Factoid yesterday, where I explained the meaning behind the word codswallop...
Now WIN the Codd bottle itself!
It's a cheesy competition, partly in celebration of the new course from Nick Daws - How to Win Contests - and it's EASY to win.
Just complete the following tie-breaker:
"I love reading Karl's Blog because..."
Humorous entries and slick ditties please. Send them to me at karl@karlmoore.com and make sure you put the phrase "Karl Moore Competition" in the subject line so that it gets past the spam filter.
I'll choose a winner last thing on Monday April 9th!
GOOD LUCK! :)

Okay, just enough time to sneak in another snapshot before I dash!
Here's Billy and Jack having a snooze together just a couple of days ago. (This was, thankfully, one of Billy's quieter moments.)
Remember to send those healthy, healing wishes!
And if you're missing my usual dose of inspirational whatnots, quotations, and self-development stuff, then why not check out the archives?

These days, everyone wants your attention.
Everything is done in Internet time. The world is rush-rush, Microwave Meal, Buy-It-Now.
We forget to spend a few minutes each day... with ourselves.
Working on our self-development. Inspiring. Learning.
Well, that's what this blog hopes to deliver. And today, I'd like to show you how to receive that daily reminder... with a minimum of hassle! :)
The EASIEST method of receiving my blogs is by e-mail.

The XML and RSS buttons can be found half-way down the left-hand side of any Karl Blog.com page. Just copy the links into your reader (or click on any of the reader buttons) to begin subscribing.
Or - most exciting of all - add me to your toolbar!
That's right. You can add Karl Blog.com to your Google toolbar. Here's how it'll look:
... "So, how do you do it??"
Well, just click on this button:
Or hit this link. Then click on the "Add" button in the dialog box which appears. From then on, you'll begin receiving my blog posts straight into your browser. Just click on the arrow to view/preview the current posts. You can also choose a slightly different design -- the three stars logo from any of my sites. To grab that design, click on this button: * * * Oh yes, I forgot... You can also visit the site any time online at http://www.karlblog.com/ But with all these gadgety methods of subscribing, who just wants to visit? ;) Have a great day! Labels: blog stuff
(Listen to Karl's AUDIO version of this post by clicking here!)
Today, I'd like to say thanks.
To you.
Why?
I was interview earlier in January about my writing work at "How to Tell a Great Story."
During the interview, Aneeta asked what I did to "find my voice." I answered that being forced to churn out fresh articles, week in, week out, to a strict magazine deadline... That act forced me to get quicker, and better.
And when I wrote my VB .NET books, I was forced to learn and improve my knowledge... And therefore find my "programming voice."
In other words...
... By teaching, I learned.
Well, I've realized something.
Over the past four months, I've been writing at least one post a day for my subscribers here at Karl Blog.com.
The goal of most of my posts is to inspire... And help anyone that may be reading to grow in some way. To assist on the journey to self-development.
I set my goal to post daily.
And let me tell you...
... It's REALLY "forced" me to develop MYSELF further!
From the feedback I've received, I know my posts somehow make a small difference.
But they make the MOST difference to me.
They help to remind me to appreciate life to the full -- And that there's no other moment except the present.
And so for that, today, I send YOU my very sincere thanks.
From the heart.
Thank you.Labels: blog stuff
It's the beginning of a New Year!Welcome to 2007. Your new life begins here. Now, one of my personal resolutions this year is to continue at Karl Blog.com with even more vigour. I'll be posting daily... and hopefully offer a little inspiration, a little fun, and a little spirituality to my friendly readers. And I really want to share this happiness with as many people as possible. Which is why today I'd like to ask... "Will you link to me?"Honestly, I've been blessed with the success of this blog so far. In just three short months... Rebecca Marina and Bradley Thompson have both promoted this site to over 100,000 individuals. I'm now enjoying countless XML subscribers, over 500 e-mail readers, and around 6,000 hits on a good day! And I really want to continue help individuals recognize the joy that is inherently inside each of us. So, if you have your own blog or website, then I'd really like to ask you link across to Karl Blog.com. Here's my link:
And here's my suggested link text:
Karl Moore's Blog - For Daily Inspiration Of course, it's totally up to you. I only want you to help promote my work if you enjoy it.
This blog will always be free of charge, and I will continue to maintain it for years to come... possibly, forever. And it would be nice if the number of people reading grew alongside my own personal development.
So, could you possibly help me? If you'd like to exchange blog links, then feel free to contact me direct. You can mail me at karlblogupdates-owner AT googlegroups.com (Obviously, replace AT with the @ symbol.) Thank you again for reading... And I can't WAIT to experience the joys of 2007! :) Labels: blog stuff
If you've subscribed to this blog for any length of time, you'll have noticed something.
At least every other day, I post a message designed to inspire.
I've done that for perhaps three months now -- and I have absolutely no intention of stopping.
But what's the point?
I mean, once you've discovered the beauty of life -- and been inspired to be the best person you can -- surely that's enough?
Well, not quite.
Zig Ziglar once said:
"People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing - that's why we recommend it daily."
That's the reason I post to Karl Blog like I do.
Because everyone needs to be constantly reminded just how magical everything can be.
Not least of all, me.
So thank YOU for giving me the opportunity to keep myself motivated.
And thanks for stopping by and reading today!
Be happy! :)
(Also, a big thanks today to Bradley Thompson and Rebecca Marina, both of whom promoted my blog on Monday to well over 100,000 individuals on their combined mailing lists. Wow!)Labels: blog stuff, inspiration, quotes
One of my favourite quotes is...
"Strangers are just friends you haven't met yet." Interesting, eh?
Let me share something with you.
A short while ago, I installed a little script onto this blog which shows where my visitors are reading from.
The results are fascinating. Here's a recent snapshot, plotted onto a world map:
Click on the image to view the full version.
The larger red dots indicate 100-999 visitors, whereas the tiny dots represent 1-99.
As you can see, most of my visitors come from the United Kingdom and the big USA cities. There's also a scattering of individuals throughout Europe, Australia and Africa... even the East.
Plus a couple of islands someone in the ocean I really didn't even knew existed!
Fascinating.
And they're all friends I haven't met yet.
So think about it...
Which strangers might you bump into today?
And could they be friends you just haven't met yet?
Maybe they're the one missing link you really need right now?
Consider it. Smile. And open yourself up to new experiences.
Thanks for visiting! :)
